Right-hander Jonathan Loáisiga is set to rejoin the New York Yankees following Tommy John surgery, with a one-year deal guaranteeing him $5 million, according to AP News. The agreement, announced Saturday, includes incentives that could push his earnings to $10.5 million over two seasons.
The deal provides Loáisiga with a $500,000 signing bonus and a $4.5 million salary for 2024. Additionally, the Yankees hold a $5 million team option for 2026 with no buyout. If the option is exercised, Loáisiga could earn up to $500,000 in performance bonuses based on innings pitched, with $100,000 increments for reaching thresholds from 50 to 70 innings, reported by Washington Times.
Pitching coach Matt Blake expressed optimism about Loáisiga’s return during a recent interview. “I imagine him being one of the high-leverage guys,” Blake said. “Obviously, we got to take some time to get him right, make sure we don’t rush him into competition.”
The 30-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery on May 1 after being sidelined earlier in the season with a strained right flexor muscle. He made only three relief appearances before landing on the injured list. Loáisiga’s recovery timeline suggests he could return to action by late April or May.
In 2023, Loáisiga struggled with right elbow inflammation, limiting him to just 17 games. He was absent from the Yankees’ roster from early April until early August. Despite these setbacks, his career statistics remain impressive. Over seven seasons, Loáisiga has a 19-11 record with a 3.44 ERA, including 11 starts and 152 relief appearances. He has struck out 207 batters while walking 72 across 219 2/3 innings. Known for his power, he averaged 97.8 mph on his sinker last season.
Loáisiga, who earned $2.5 million in his final arbitration-eligible season, became a free agent before signing this new deal. The Yankees’ willingness to invest in his recovery underscores their belief in his potential to contribute in high-pressure situations.
With Loáisiga’s return on the horizon, the Yankees are hopeful his presence will bolster their bullpen and add depth to their pitching staff. His ability to perform in critical moments will be pivotal as the team navigates a highly competitive American League in 2024.
