Julie Fedorchak, the North Dakota Public Service Commissioner, clinched the Republican primary victory for the state’s at-large congressional district, marking a significant milestone in the race for North Dakota’s lone congressional seat. With a commanding lead of 46% to 29%, the Associated Press called the race in Fedorchak’s favor, essentially sealing what had been a fiercely contested battle.

Fedorchak’s victory sets her up for the November elections, where she will face a Democratic challenger. However, the prospects for Democrats in North Dakota are daunting, as the party has not won a statewide election there since 1988.

The race saw Fedorchak triumph over state Rep. Rick Becker and military veteran Alex Balazs. Balazs, noted by Ballotpedia for his unique service record in the Air Force, Army, and Navy, had the endorsement of the state’s Republican Party. Becker, a former plastic surgeon, received support from notable figures like former Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, and his son, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., as well as House Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good.

Fedorchak’s campaign was bolstered by endorsements from high-profile Republicans including former President Donald Trump, outgoing Republican Governor Doug Burgum, and Senator John Hoeven, R-N.D. These endorsements likely played a crucial role in her primary election success.

The political landscape in North Dakota was further complicated by the decision of three-term Rep. Kelly Armstrong to not seek re-election to Congress, opting instead to run for governor. This move set the stage for a heated gubernatorial primary, with Armstrong endorsed by Trump and Lt. Gov. Tammy Miller backed by Burgum, told The Hill.

Alongside the congressional and gubernatorial primaries, North Dakota voters also faced a decision on a significant ballot initiative. This initiative proposed banning any candidate who would turn 81 years old during their term from running for U.S. House or Senate. The outcome of this ballot was still uncertain at the time of reporting.

As Fedorchak prepares for the upcoming general election, her primary victory underlines the significant support she has garnered within her party and sets the stage for what promises to be a spirited campaign heading into November.
