Pop princess or lyrical chameleon? Doja Cat is opening up like never before—and her new album might just be her most personal project to date.

Doja Cat is getting real with fans about where her head—and her heart—are at these days. In a refreshingly candid interview with V Magazine, the chart-topping artist revealed that she’s deep into creating a new album that leans heavily into pop, but don’t expect a glittery, shallow radio-chaser. This time, it’s all about the sound, the feelings, and the truth behind the music.

“I want to focus more on: how does the mix sound? Do I even need these instruments here? Do I need to recut this verse?” she told V Magazine. “It’s how things sound that makes the music worth listening to. I would not be an artist if I didn’t care, right?”

That care is clear in how she talks about her creative shift. Known for effortlessly bouncing between genres, Doja previously slammed pop music as “not exciting” and even labeled her earlier pop albums as “cash-grabs.” But now? She’s fully embracing the genre with fresh eyes—and a deeper purpose.

“I do want to be self-aware enough to admit the fact that this is a pop-driven project,” she said. “Pop is just that it’s popular… There are some people who don’t see it as music. They see it as if this is some kind of football for girls and gays.”

This upcoming album, titled Vie, is shaping up to be a journey into love, heartbreak, and self-discovery. Doja describes it as a reflection of hope, both in her romantic life and in how she’s growing as a person.

Vie is very much about love in a way that reflects how I want it to be in the future—my hope, my hopefulness. What I hope it could be,” she shared.

While the album might be pop at its core, fans of Doja’s rap skills have nothing to worry about. She made it clear that she’s still keeping her lyrical edge alive: rapping is very much on the tracklist.

And unlike many artists chasing Billboard wins, Doja’s not stressing about chart positions. This album isn’t about breaking records—it’s about breaking personal ground.

“If for any reason a project of mine does a little less good than the last one, I don’t want to be up in arms and upset about it,” she explained. “I want to embrace that.”

Doja’s shift toward a pop sound doesn’t mean she’s playing it safe—it’s more like she’s choosing to speak her truth in a language more people understand. By tuning into the emotional and technical details of her music, she’s creating something that feels less like a calculated product and more like a diary set to a beat.

With Vie expected to drop later this year, fans are buzzing to see how this new chapter unfolds. And if the honesty and heart in her interview are any clue, it’s going to be one worth listening to.
