At the Democratic National Convention on Monday evening, President Joe Biden became emotional as he formally passed the torch to Vice President Kamala Harris, addressing speculation about his feelings regarding stepping aside, told The Wrap. Biden insisted that any rumors of anger were “not true” and emphasized that his decision was driven by his deep love for the country.
The program, which was running behind schedule, saw Biden take the stage at around 10:30 pm CT after being introduced by his daughter, Ashley Biden. Upon taking the stage, Biden embraced his daughter and wiped away tears before beginning his speech.
Earlier in the evening, Harris made a surprise appearance, delivering a brief speech that was met with enthusiasm from the crowd at Chicago’s United Center. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also spoke, receiving a raucous response, particularly when she mentioned former President Donald Trump’s legal troubles, prompting chants of “lock him up!” from the audience.
As Biden’s speech neared its conclusion, he shifted focus from the accomplishments of his administration to the reasons behind his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. “Folks, I’ve got five months left in my presidency,” Biden said, “I’ve got a lot to do. I intend to get it done. It’s been the honor of my lifetime to serve as your president.”
“I love the job, but I love my country more,” Biden continued, emphasizing that his departure was not motivated by anger but by a desire to preserve democracy. As the crowd erupted in chants of “We love Joe!” Biden reiterated, “I love my country more and we need to preserve our democracy.”
He concluded by rallying the audience for the upcoming election, saying, “In 2024, we need you to vote. We need you to keep the Senate, to win back the House of Representatives, and above all, we need you to beat Donald Trump! And elect Kamala and Tim, President and Vice President of the United States of America!”
