Aroldis Chapman, the left-handed reliever for the Pittsburgh Pirates, has been handed a two-game suspension due to a confrontation with an umpire after his ejection this past Monday. The incident occurred after Chapman allowed a decisive double to Harrison Bader of the New York Mets, which led to some contentious words exchanged with home plate umpire Edwin Moscoso, ultimately resulting in his ejection.
The suspension, announced by MLB on Thursday, will see Chapman sidelined for the upcoming games against the Boston Red Sox on Friday and Saturday at PNC Park, assuming he does not appeal the decision.
In a statement, Michael Hill, MLB’s senior vice president for on-field operations, detailed the punishment, stating, “Aroldis Chapman has received a two-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for his inappropriate actions during Monday night’s game at Citi Field.”
Chapman, 36, is currently in his inaugural season with the Pirates after signing a one-year contract worth $10.5 million. His career has included stints with several teams over the last three seasons, including a successful period with the Texas Rangers where he secured his second World Series title.
