In a startling revelation, Los Angeles police have identified 33-year-old Jerrid Joseph Powell as the suspect in the killings of three homeless men who were fatally shot while they slept in different parts of Los Angeles this week. Powell was already in custody for an unrelated homicide in San Dimas when he was formally arrested for these additional crimes.
LAPD Chief Michel Moore disclosed that investigators found a handgun in Powell’s car, which was linked to the shootings of the homeless individuals. These shootings took place in the early morning hours across various parts of the city. The first victim, 37-year-old Jose Vamos, was shot on November 26, followed by 62-year-old Mark Diggs on November 27, and a 52-year-old man on November 29.
Powell is also connected to the fatal shooting of Nicholas Simbolon, a 42-year-old Los Angeles County employee, in San Dimas. This incident, which occurred on November 28, was captured on surveillance footage, leading to Powell’s initial arrest.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna emphasized the role of surveillance technology in tracking Powell’s vehicle, leading to his capture. Powell, a convicted felon with a history of violent crime, was initially booked on suspicion of murder and robbery, with a $2 million bail.
According to report by a CNN News, The Los Angeles Police Department had formed a special task force in response to these crimes, involving various investigative units. Mayor Karen Bass urged the unhoused community to seek shelter and support in light of these incidents, while the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority activated its winter shelter program to offer additional safety.
Authorities have not found any connection between Powell and his victims and continue to investigate the possibility of similar unsolved crimes in the region. They urge anyone with information to contact their tipline.
