A Missouri woman was caught last week after escaping shackles and stealing a police car prior to a gunshot at Kansas City International Airport that wounded an officer, according to reports.
Lacy Perry of Independence, Missouri, was charged in Platte County with first-degree interfering with a motor vehicle, disarming a police officer, and other related charges, according to Fox affiliate WDAF in Kansas City.
Kevin Bloom of Warrensburg, Missouri, was also detained and charged with third-degree assault and resisting arrest, among other crimes.
According to court records acquired by WDAF, a KCI officer observed a white pickup truck with no license plates leaving the airport’s budget parking lot at 5:15 a.m.
Bloom and Perry were inside the car when the officer activated the police vehicle’s emergency lights and sirens.
The officer was ultimately able to pull in front of Bloom’s white pickup and slow it down. However, court papers reveal that Bloom hit the patrol car. The cop was able to cause Bloom to lose control of the truck and crash into a light post by performing a pit maneuver, which compels a fleeing car to turn sideways.
Rather than stopping, Bloom tried to flee, reportedly hitting another police car.
Bloom and Perry were detained, with the latter handcuffed and put in the back of a squad car. Bloom resisted arrest, and the officer who had placed Perry in the back of the squad car rushed to help arrest Bloom.
Perry broke from his handcuffs while alone in the patrol vehicle, climbed into the driver’s seat, and drove away. According to WDAF, she came to a halt and motioned for Bloom to get inside the car, but he refused.
According to court filings, police shifted their focus to Perry, pulled out their pistols, and told her to get out of the car. Officers approached the car when she refused. Perry then rushed at one of the officers’ guns while the other officer tried to get Perry out of the vehicle, according to reports.
When Perry attempted to remove the pistol from the officer’s holster, the gun went off and shot the officer in the leg.
According to WDAF, police have not stated if Perry’s hands were on the pistol when it went off.
Perry has pled not guilty to the charges and is due back in court on January 3.
According to WDAF, Bloom appeared in court on Monday and a judge entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf. Bloom is expected to return to court on Tuesday.
